Homily for the Ordination of José Rojas Madrigal and Elías Ramírez Reyes
on the Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 14, 2026,
at the Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption
1 Chronicles 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2; 1 Corinthians 15:54b-57; Luke 11:27-28

Peace be with you!
Today we ordain you, José Rojas and you Elías Ramírez, to the permanent diaconate. The Gospel for this Vigil on the Feast of the Assumption is quite short, and you will want to hold in your heart its specific mandate as you go forward in your diaconate:
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
This command echoes the words of this Rite of Ordination where in a few moments I hand you the Book of the Gospel and say:
Receive the Gospel of Christ,
whose herald you have become.
Believe what you read,
teach what you believe,
and practice what you teach.
In the same way that the Levites receive the command from Aaron to bear the tabernacle in the First Book of Chronicles, you receive the mandate to bear the weight of the Gospel “…whose herald you have become.”
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, the Levites could be seen as a kind of Old Testament prefiguring of our diaconate. The high priest Aaron did not call the Levites to the priesthood of the temple. Rather they were called to assist Aaron and carry the tabernacle as the Jewish people sojourned on their faith pilgrimage.
You bear the tabernacle of the Word! You bear the tabernacle of the Gospel! These are Marian commands that align to the Marian motto of Pope Saint John Paul the Great under whose relics you are to be ordained: “Totus tuus.” This motto isinspired by the writings of Saint Louis-Marie Gringnion de Montfort and his “Treatise on the True Devotion to Mary.” The full phrase is: “Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt.” “I am all yours and all I have is yours, O most loving Jesus,through Mary your most Holy Mother.”
“Totus tuus” reflected Saint John Paul the Second II’s intense Marian piety – a piety that the Polish composer Henryk Górecki tried to capture musically in 1987. That haunting musical piece gives the sense of an interiority that resounds and repeats the words of Saint Louis de Montfort to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “Totus Tuus,” “Totally yours.”
“Totus tuus” should make your heart sing too, as we ordain you on this day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary before the relics of Saint John Paul the Second.
“Totus tuus” means you give yourself over to become the church minister of charity, reflecting the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary for all, especially the poorest in our midst.
“Totus tuus” means you build on your desire to reach youth so evident in your lives. You, José, come from San Luis Rio Colorado in Sonora and you, Elías come from San Sebastián Progreso in Oaxaca. While your own journeys of faith differ,one thing I noticed in your biographies was a focus on youth. You, José, recalled how key the Encuentro process was for your marriage as well as your faith – a return to the faith of your youth. José, you wrote that the world would be a better place if parents could hang together so that children would have a more stable environment. And you, Elías, noted how in your small town of San Sebastián Progreso, your parents and family built up your faith through youth activities and catechesis.
“Totus tuus.” This is the witness we need here in the North and it is the key to every missionary initiative. So many – including in our predominantly English-speaking communities – often see children as a burden rather than a gift. Sometimes in marriage preparation, our young people lack confidence that they can even have children until they’ve built the nest of homeownership, car ownership and schooling before having children. Our youngest sometimes lack a felt sense that children are essential to the happiness of marriage and family life.
José and Elías, search for ways to share this arduous joy of family life with those around you – especially our Anglos. Invite them to your family gatherings and festivals. Teach them to eat pozole. It’s complicated for us to know how to get the right amount of cabbage and onions into the pozole bowl. Give yourself to them as missionaries! “Totus tuus.”
Let me close with this final point. Being a stone’s throw from the “German” themed village of Leavenworth, it’s wise to recall that the German phrase “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” is “Mariä Himmelfahrt.” The German word “Himmel” means heaven and “Fahrt” means journey.
This is who Mary is! This is who we are to become! We look to Mary. She shows us the way. She shows us the journey of Jesus. She guides the path through the hardships of this life into the blessings of eternal life. She directs us on our heavenly journey. She is our “Himmelfahrt.” As deacons, be the Marian signpost captured in our sacred scripture: “Blessed are those who hear the word and keep it!

en la Vigilia de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, 14 de agosto de 2026,

¡La paz del Señor esté con ustedes!
Hoy los ordenamos a ustedes, José Rojas y Elías Ramírez, para el diaconado permanente. El Evangelio de esta Vigilia de la fiesta de la Asunción es muy breve, y querrán guardar en sus corazones su mandato específico al avanzar en su diaconado:
«¡Dichosos los que escuchan la palabra de Dios y la guardan!»
Este mandato resuena con las palabras de este Rito de Ordenación, en el que dentro de unos momentos les entregaré el Libro de los Evangelios y les diré:
Recibe el Evangelio de Cristo,
del cual has sido hecho heraldo.
Cree lo que lees,
enseña lo que crees
y practica lo que enseñas.
Del mismo modo que los levitas reciben de Aarón la orden de transportar el tabernáculo en el Primer Libro de las Crónicas, ustedes reciben el mandato de cargar con el peso del Evangelio: «…del cual has sido hecho heraldo».
Como mencioné hace unas semanas, los levitas pueden considerarse una especie de prefiguración de nuestro diaconado en el Antiguo Testamento. El sumo sacerdote Aarón no llamó a los levitas al sacerdocio del templo; más bien, fueron llamados a asistir a Aarón y a transportar el tabernáculo mientras el pueblo judío avanzaba en su peregrinación de fe.
¡Ustedes llevan el tabernáculo de la Palabra! ¡Ustedes llevan el tabernáculo del Evangelio! Estos son mandatos marianos que se alinean con el lema mariano de San Juan Pablo el Grande – bajo cuyas reliquias van a ser ordenados – «Totus tuus». Este lema está inspirado en los escritos de San Luis María Grignion de Montfort y su «Tratado de la verdadera devoción a María». La frase completa es: «Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt». «Soy todo tuyo y todo lo que tengo es tuyo, oh Jesús amantísimo, por medio de María, tu Santísima Madre».
«Totus tuus» reflejaba la intensa piedad mariana de San Juan Pablo II, una piedad que el compositor polaco Henryk Górecki intentó plasmar musicalmente en 1987. Esa pieza musical conmovedora transmite una sensación de interioridad que resuena y repite las palabras de San Luis María Grignion de Montfort a la Santísima Virgen María: «Totus Tuus», «Totalmente tuyo».
«Totus tuus» también debería hacer esta música a tu corazón, ahora que te ordenamos en este día de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, ante las reliquias de San Juan Pablo II.
«Totus tuus» significa entregarte para convertirte en ministro de la caridad de la Iglesia, reflejando el cuidado maternal de la Santísima Virgen María hacia todos, especialmente hacia los más pobres entre nosotros.
«Totus tuus» significa edificar sobre el deseo de llegar a los jóvenes, algo tan evidente en sus vidas. Tú, José, vienes de San Luis Río Colorado, en Sonora, y tú, Elías, vienes de San Sebastián Progreso, en Oaxaca. Aunque sus caminos de fe son distintos, algo que noté en sus biografías fue el enfoque en la juventud. Tú, José, recordaste cuán clave fue el proceso del «Encuentro» tanto para tu matrimonio como para tu fe – un retorno a la fe de tu juventud. José, escribiste que el mundo sería un lugar mejor si los padres pudieran mantenerse unidos, para que los hijos tuvieran un entorno más estable. Y tú, Elías, señalaste cómo en tu pequeño pueblo de San Sebastián Progreso tus padres y tu familia fortalecieron tu fe a través de actividades juveniles y la catequesis.
«Totus tuus». Este es el testimonio que necesitamos aquí en el Norte y es la clave de toda iniciativa misionera. Muchos – incluso en nuestras comunidades de habla mayoritariamente inglesa – a menudo ven a los hijos como una carga más que como un don. A veces, durante la preparación matrimonial, a nuestros jóvenes les falta confianza para tener hijos; sienten que primero deben construir el «nido» – tener casa propia, automóvil y asegurar la educación – antes de tener descendencia. A los más jóvenes a veces les falta percibir realmente que los hijos son esenciales para la felicidad del matrimonio y de la vida familiar.
José y Elías, busquen formas de compartir esta ardua alegría de la vida familiar con quienes los rodean, especialmente con los angloparlantes. Invítenlos a sus reuniones familiares y fiestas. Enséñenles a comer pozole. A nosotros nos cuesta saber cómo poner la cantidad justa de repollo y cebolla en el plato de pozole. ¡Entréguense a ellos como misioneros! «Totus tuus».
Permítanme concluir con este último punto. Al estar a un paso del pueblo de estilo alemán de Leavenworth, es oportuno recordar que la expresión alemana para «La Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María» es “Mariä Himmelfahrt”. La palabra alemana “Himmel” significa «cielo» y “Fahrt” significa «viaje» o «travesía».
¡Eso es lo que es la Santísima María! ¡En eso es en lo que debemos convertirnos nosotros! Miramos a María. Ella nos muestra el camino. Ella nos muestra la travesía de Jesús. Ella guía nuestros pasos a través de las dificultades de esta vida hacia las bendiciones de la vida eterna. Ella nos orienta en nuestro viaje celestial. Ella es nuestra “Himmelfahrt”. Como diáconos, sean el signo mariano que recogen las Sagradas Escrituras: «Bienaventurados los que escuchan la palabra y la guardan».
