Catholic Advocates Needed
The 2027 legislative session will bring thousands of proposals for new laws and changes to existing statutes. Catholics are called to be part of our communities, including participating in all levels of government as voters and advocates for the common good. As we prepare for another state legislative session with a massive budget deficit, a host of new legislators and the always present need to ensure people in poverty are prioritized and the dignity and sanctity of life preserved, the WSCC seeks to grow our voice.
During each session, the WSCC signs in to testify in person or online on specific proposals. We also meet with legislators during the interim between sessions and as we can in Olympia. As regular readers know, we ask Catholics to sign in pro or con when bills are being heard in committees and to contact your legislators throughout the process. Now, we would like to create a stable list of Catholics willing to take their advocacy further.
If you are willing and able to testify online and in person, and/or meet with your legislators during the interim months and during the session, we want to hear from you using this survey. To be an advocate with the WSCC, you must be willing to commit to the position the WSCC is taking on the specific piece of legislation and use our talking points to ensure a consistent message.
For those who are interested in doing more to raise our Catholic voice, please complete our Catholic Advocate survey. Responses will be used by the WSCC to send requests for action to those who have expressed a willingness to engage more deeply and in specific policy areas.
Read Pope Leo’s Encyclical
Pope Leo released the first encyclical of his papacy, Magnifica humanitas, on preserving the human person in the age of artificial intelligence, on May 25, 2026. Fittingly, the pope signed the document on May 15, the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, Leo XIII’s encyclical on labor and capital at the dawn of the first industrial revolution. The encyclical offers guidance for the development and use of artifical intelligence and reiterates Pope Leo’s statements on the 60th World Communications Day:
“The real threat to humanity is our willingness to offload our ability to listen and think critically to AI and social-media algorithms. …We are thus robbed of the opportunity to encounter others, who are always different from ourselves, and with whom we can and must learn to relate. Without embracing others, there can be no relationships or friendships.”

La sesión legislativa de 2027 traerá miles de propuestas para nuevas leyes y cambios en los estatutos existentes. Los católicos están llamados a formar parte de nuestras comunidades, incluyendo la participación en todos los niveles de gobierno como votantes y defensores del bien común. El Papa León publicó la primera encíclica de su papado, Magnifica humanitas, sobre el tema de preservar la persona humana en la era de la inteligencia artificial, el 25 de mayo de 2026. De manera apropiada, el papa firmó el documento el 15 de mayo, en el 135º aniversario de la Rerum Novarum, la encíclica de León XIII sobre el trabajo y el capital al amanecer de la primera revolución industrial. Yakima Goes Solar
The Diocese of Yakima has partnered with Catholic Energies through the Catholic Climate Covenant to help willing parishes and schools across the diocese access solar energy. Catholic Energies provides energy analysis to improve efficiency and save parishes on their monthly utility costs. They estimate the reduction of power usage and utilities, and work with vendors to acquire and install solar panels.
The partnership with Catholic Climate Covenant includes developing a funding plan that benefits 1) parish energy usage and expense, 2) the faithful who are financially willing to fund the move to clean energy, and 3) our environment through more efficient use of heating/ cooling/ electrical appliances.
We can all thank the Yakima Diocese for its efforts to keep Washington green and clean!
