See the Child!
Homily for Epiphany Sunday 2025 Mass for Life Sunday at Saint Paul Cathedral, Yakima, WA

Peace be with you! “They were overjoyed in seeing the star and on entering the house saw the child with Mary his mother.” This brief sentence from St. Matthew’s Gospel describes the joy of the Magi as they encounter the Christ child.
Traditionally we align the Sunday Epiphany readings each year with our joy at PREPARES in seeing each year a new child born. The birth of the Christ child helps us see and welcome each child as Christ.
That’s PREPARES. PREPARES is the singular initiative of the Washington state bishops on behalf of children – born and unborn. We walk the journey of life with the mom and her family from the children’s first moment of conception to the fifth birthday. It’s a true “thrive by five” that uplifts the Gospel of Life with joy and hope.
As bishop I am keenly aware that so many believed that the number of abortions would decline after the United States Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe vs Wade. But that is not what has happened. Both locally and nationally the number of abortions is going up – not down – mainly due to over-the-counter chemical abortions.
But PREPARES offers a joyful alternative to real women here in Central Washington – women like Delilah. At seventeen, Delilah was already carrying a lot. She helped care for her younger siblings, kept the household moving, and tried to manage school as best she could. She was used to being the one who held things together, even when she felt worn thin.
When she learned she was pregnant, her first reaction was fear. Not excitement. Not confidence. Just fear. She didn’t want to keep the baby. She didn’t think she could provide what a child would need, and she worried she would repeat the instability she had known.
Then she met her PREPARES Family Companion, Laura. In their first conversation, Delilah said plainly, ‘I don’t think I can keep the baby.’
Laura didn’t try to talk her into a decision. She didn’t rush her or tell her what she ‘should’ do. Instead, she offered something Delilah had rarely had: consistent emotional support. She listened, asked gentle questions, let Delilah name her fears, and stayed present when the feeling of being overwhelmed was highest.
Indeed, nearly 60 percent of adults who grew up in poverty report having little to no significant mentor or supportive adult during youth and young adulthood. For young women like Delilah, even one steady, caring person can change the direction of the story.
And slowly, something shifted. Delilah didn’t suddenly feel ready. But with Laura walking alongside her, she stopped feeling so alone. She began making decisions from support rather than panic. When her baby was born and placed in her arms, the fear didn’t disappear – but it wasn’t the whole picture anymore. She felt something steadier: the sense that she could do this, not because everything was perfect, but because she finally had someone in her corner.
Today, Delilah and her baby share a small room of their own. It’s simple, but it’s stable. A donated crib, a few boxes of diapers, and the daily routines of early motherhood fill the space. What has made the biggest difference isn’t the size of the room – it’s the presence of people who didn’t let her walk through this alone.
Behind Delilah are folks like Laura carefully trained volunteers – often women who’ve been mothers themselves – but learn the skill and art of deep listening through our Catholic Charities training and support.
One of our volunteers at St. Rose of Lima tells of how she has been a companion to a large extended PREPARES extended family – all asylum seekers from Guatemala. They left because they weren’t safe. They drove 300 miles in a beat-up car. Now they’re crammed in a home with another family. But they’re safe. Another volunteer talked of feeling “honored and trusted” after a family they’d assisted invited them to a family birthday party.
PREPARES is in every parish in the Diocese of Yakima. We literally saved nearly 229 babies in 2023-24 and we increased this last fiscal year to 334. Even more eye-popping are the overall numbers of moms and families we served. In 2023-24 that number was 3,632. This last year it was 4,820 – a jump of nearly 20 percent. Some of these increases are due to cuts in AppleHealth and other community supports.
PREPARES gives us a chance to reenter the Epiphany joy of seeing Christ in every newborn child. In a culture deeply polarized and distrustful we counter with building relationships with children and families. We reach families before they’re off to a pharmacist or an abortion clinic.
I’d like all the volunteers involved in any kind of life ministry to stand. I want to thank PREPARES as well as our many partners in our life ministries for helping us to follow the Epiphany star and seeing Christ in every newborn child. May ours be the words of this Gospel today: “They were overjoyed in seeing the star and on entering the house saw the child with Mary his mother.”

Contemplen al Niño!

¡La paz del Señor esté con ustedes! “Se llenaron de gran alegría al ver la estrella, y al entrar en la casa, vieron al niño con María, su madre”. Esta breve frase del Evangelio de San Mateo describe la alegría de los Reyes Magos al encontrarse con el Niño Jesús.
Tradicionalmente, cada año relacionamos las lecturas del Domingo de Epifanía con nuestra alegría en PREPARES al ver nacer un nuevo niño. El nacimiento del Niño Jesús nos ayuda a ver y acoger a cada niño como si fuera Cristo.
Eso es PREPARES. PREPARES es la iniciativa singular de los obispos del estado de Washington en favor de los niños, nacidos y no nacidos. Acompañamos a la madre y a su familia en el camino de la vida, desde el primer momento de la concepción hasta el quinto cumpleaños del niño. Es un verdadero programa de “prosperar antes de los cinco años” que exalta el Evangelio de la Vida con alegría y esperanza.
Como obispo, soy muy consciente de que muchos creyeron que el número de abortos disminuiría después de la revocación de Roe contra Wade por la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos. Pero eso no es lo que ha sucedido. Tanto a nivel local como nacional, el número de abortos está aumentando, no disminuyendo, principalmente debido a los abortos químicos.
Pero PREPARES ofrece una alternativa llena de alegría a las mujeres de la región central de Washington, mujeres como Delilah. A los diecisiete años, Delilah ya cargaba con muchas responsabilidades. Ayudaba a cuidar a sus hermanos menores, se encargaba de la casa e intentaba compaginar los estudios lo mejor que podía. Estaba acostumbrada a ser la que mantenía todo en orden, incluso cuando se sentía agotada.
Cuando se enteró de que estaba embarazada, su primera reacción fue miedo. No emoción. No confianza. Solo miedo. No quería tener al bebé. No creía poder proporcionarle lo que un niño necesita, y le preocupaba repetir la inestabilidad que ella había vivido.
Entonces conoció a Laura, su acompañante familiar de PREPARES. En su primera conversación, Delilah dijo con franqueza: “No creo que pueda tener al bebé”.
Laura no intentó convencerla. No la presionó ni le dijo lo que “debía” hacer. En cambio, le ofreció algo que Delilah rara vez había tenido: apoyo emocional constante. La escuchó, le hizo preguntas con delicadeza, le permitió expresar sus miedos y permaneció a su lado en los momentos de mayor angustia.
De hecho, casi el 60% de los adultos que crecieron en la pobreza informan haber tenido pocos o ningún mentor o adulto de apoyo significativo durante su juventud y adultez temprana. Para mujeres jóvenes como Delilah, incluso una sola persona estable y cariñosa puede cambiar el rumbo de su historia.
Y poco a poco, algo cambió. Delilah no se sintió preparada de repente. Pero con Laura a su lado, dejó de sentirse tan sola. Comenzó a tomar decisiones desde la tranquilidad en lugar del pánico. Cuando nació su bebé y lo pusieron en sus brazos, el miedo no desapareció, pero ya no lo dominaba todo. Sintió algo más sólido: la sensación de que podía lograrlo, no porque todo fuera perfecto, sino porque finalmente tenía a alguien que la apoyaba.
Hoy, Delilah y su bebé comparten una pequeña habitación propia. Es sencilla, pero estable. Una cuna donada, algunas cajas de pañales y las rutinas diarias de la maternidad temprana llenan el espacio. Lo que ha marcado la mayor diferencia no es el tamaño de la habitación, sino la presencia de personas que no la dejaron sola en este camino.
Detrás de Delilah hay personas como Laura, voluntarias cuidadosamente capacitadas, a menudo mujeres que también han sido madres, que aprenden la habilidad y el arte de la escucha profunda a través de la capacitación y el apoyo de Caridades Católicas.
Una de nuestras voluntarias en St. Rose of Lima cuenta cómo ha acompañado a una gran familia extendida de PREPARES, todos solicitantes de asilo de Guatemala. Se fueron porque no estaban seguros. Viajaron 300 millas en un coche destartalado. Ahora están hacinados con otra familia. Pero están a salvo. Otra voluntaria habló de sentirse “honrada y con la confianza depositada en ella” después de que una familia a la que habían ayudado la invitara a una fiesta de cumpleaños familiar.
PREPARES está presente en cada parroquia de la Diócesis de Yakima. Literalmente salvamos a casi 229 bebés en 2023-24 y aumentamos esta cifra a 334 en el último año fiscal. Aún más impresionantes son las cifras totales de madres y familias a las que atendimos. En 2023-24, ese número fue de 3.632. El año pasado fueron 4.820, un aumento de casi el 20 por ciento. Parte de este aumento se debe a los recortes en AppleHealth y otros programas de apoyo comunitario.
PREPARES nos brinda la oportunidad de revivir la alegría de la Epifanía al ver a Cristo en cada recién nacido. En una cultura profundamente polarizada y desconfiada, respondemos construyendo relaciones con los niños y las familias. Llegamos a las familias antes de que acudan a una farmacia o a una clínica de aborto.
Me gustaría que todos los voluntarios involucrados en cualquier tipo de ministerio a favor de la vida se pusieran de pie. Quiero agradecer a PREPARES, así como a nuestros numerosos colaboradores en nuestros ministerios a favor de la vida, por ayudarnos a seguir la estrella de la Epifanía y ver a Cristo en cada recién nacido. Que nuestras palabras sean las de este Evangelio de hoy: “Se llenaron de gran alegría al ver la estrella, y al entrar en la casa, vieron al niño con María, su madre”.
