Our Lady of the Assumption: Ark of God
Homily on the Dedication of the new Church at the parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Peshastin, Washington, August 14th, 2025
1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2, 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28
Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson, Bishop of Yakima
Ark of God. That’s the phase from our opening reading from First Chronicles where the Levites physically hoist on their shoulders the “Ark of God” into the tent pitched by David. Among the twelve tribes of Israel, the Levites were the priestly tribe, specifically designated for this special honor.
The Ark of God! In her wisdom, the Church connects this image from First Chronicles of the “Ark of God” with the Blessed Virgin Mary in our Gospel from Saint Luke. There is a detail in our Gospel from Saint Luke that is especially notable. As Jesus speaks, an unnamed woman in the congregation cries out “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.”
Mary is the Ark of God. That unknown woman sees Mary as bearing and bringing forth the full content from the Ark of God: Jesus – fully human and fully divine. Jesus – fully God and fully man. Mary is the Ark of God. That’s what the Church wants us to hear in this alignment of First Chronicles with this Gospel from Saint Luke. From the words of Jesus this undocumented woman tells all of us that Mary – the Mother of Jesus – is the Ark of God.
Mary – Ark of God. Your careful selection of your stained-glass windows underscores this same point. On the east-west axis, we see Mary as the Ark of God in the Nativity window holding Jesus and thus showing us the starting point of our Christian journey. This Nativity window faces the Resurrection window of Jesus Christ showing us the end point of our Christian journey.
Mary – Ark of God. Likewise on the north-south axis as we walk in, we first see the Assumption of Mary high over the altar and visible from the highway when illumined at night. And over the exit, we see its opposite window of the coronation of Mary reminding us of our own mission and destiny as we leave the church.
Taken together, these windows remind us that salvation is not an escape plan but a rescue plan. The very reason we build this church is not to escape from this world but to allow this world to be redeemed and saved by Jesus Christ and that Mary is the Ark of Jesus and thus the new Ark of God who bears this source of salvation in her body for all of us.
I underscore this point with a bit of German. In my family’s first language, the German word for this feast day, the Feast of the Assumption is “Himmelfahrt”. “Himmel” means “heaven” and “fahrt” means journey. “Himmelfahrt” brings together the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Assumption and the Crowning of Mary.
These are the four compass points of our salvation. And note well: Salvation is not just about our getting to heaven. No. It starts with God. It starts with God’s initiative. God’s very self – Jesus Christ – cuts a road through this world to save us and free us. We trace this journey of salvation in every prayer, every sacrament, every worship and every act of service. Salvation is not an escape plan from this world. It’s God’s rescue plan – a plan artistically embedded in your new church.
This is why we can stand beside that unnamed woman whose identity we don’t even know for she is us! Her faith sparks the connection she makes for all of us. She connects the Ark of the Old Testament with the Blessed Virgin Mary – Mother of God and Mother of Jesus.
Parishioners of Our Lady of the Assumption. That undocumented woman in this Gospel from St Luke is you. That woman is every one of you. That woman is you, your labor, your love, your wealth, your prayer and your worship. That unnamed woman’s faith is your faith today. That woman is you cooperating with the grace of God in consecrating and blessing this new church.
So, thank you Fr. Miguel González. Thank you, the parishioners in the upper Wenatchee Valley. Thank you for extending your prayer and your worship for future generations as they trace the “Himmelfahrt” – the Assumption of Mary – their own journey of faith and source of salvation. Thank you for building the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a compass of faith that shows us the way!
Let us close as we pray together the prayer you pray at every Eucharist:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.
nehme ich meine Zuflucht zu dir, Mutter, Jungfrau der Jungfrauen;
Amen.“
