The Three Kings
Homily for Epiphany Sunday 2025: Tenth Anniversary of PREPARES
Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12

Peace be with you! Our Epiphany Gospel from Saint Matthew ends with this phrase: “And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod they departed for their country by another way.”
Let’s start with the word “they.” “They” refers to the Magi or the “Three Kings” as they’re referenced in Spanish and German.
To talk about “they” – the “Three Kings” – I’ve brought a picture of our family’s first home in America. It’s taken in about 1912. My grandmother was a long-time parishioner here at St. Paul Cathedral. This picture includes her and her 11 siblings. All girls! It does show my great-grandmother “great with child.” She is carrying the first of what would be three boys! She’s carrying Balthazar. We called him uncle Balzer.
When I was about three, Santa showed up at my grandparents’ home here in Yakima on 14th and Maclaren. Just a few blocks from the Cathedral. He brought a set of Tonka trucks! And I was surprised to hear Santa speaking to my grandmother in our native German dialect.
Uncle Balzer had the figure of Santa. He was the fattest man I’d ever met. At one point he ran a couple of sausage stores here in Yakima.
You can maybe guess the name of my other two uncles: Caspar and – Frank! I don’t know what happened there but perhaps Melchior – the third of the three kings – was lucky not to have one of my uncles named after him!
Despite the name “Frank” my grandmother bitterly complained that her brothers were treated as if they were the Three Kings.
“They.” It refers to the Magi or the three kings. And, again, the entire phrase is “And having been warned by a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.”
So, moving from “they” let me turn my attention to the next phrase: “…another way.” The late Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI perhaps put it most succinctly: “God comes as a baby!” In the same way the Magi venerate the infant Jesus, so too does PREPARES venerate all children – born and unborn – but we do so traveling “…a different way…”
PREPARES as you know is the signature initiative of our bishops across Washington State to walk the journey with every mom, every child, their fathers and their families from the moment of conception to the child’s fifth birthday.
Partnering our parishes with Catholic Charities across the Diocese of Yakima, PREPARES provides wrap around love and care ranging from diapers and formula to parenting classes, life skill coaching and other kinds of skilled support. At the center are often family companions. Skilled and seasoned moms who can befriend and mentor moms with their new child. And sometimes we do this with new dads too!
Ten years ago, we started with five volunteers who reached 303 families with some level of support – a few were closely accomplished by a family companion. Today we are at 272 volunteers reaching over 3,884 families across the seven counties that form the Diocese of Yakima.
When we started PREPARES 10 years ago much of the focus was on reversing Roe vs. Wade. But I also pointed out that even when Roe vs. Wade would be reversed, abortion would remain legal in Washington State because a Supreme Court reversal would send the question of abortion back to the states.
And that is what has happened. Today both political parties support legal abortion. The Democrats support federal protection of abortion. The Republicans – including President-elect Donald Trump – support states legislating access to abortion. Even more, the first year after the reversal of Roe vs. Wade, the United States saw an INCREASE in the number of abortions. That increase included some states who had trigger laws narrowing abortion access.
While I would not want to minimize the important of advocating for the legal protection of the unborn, it should be abundantly clear that we cannot legislate or litigate our way out of abortion on demand. Like the Magi we need to find “…another way…” home to the minds and hearts of our fellow Americans.
PREPARES provides another way, a different way, and a positive way. It provides a way that doesn’t have us litigating with the Herods of today. We travel a different route. We focus on the mom and her child. When we can, we focus on the dad and the family. We chart a pathway the marks out the joy of childhood, the personal care for moms, the encouragement of dads, skills for them and their child.
For these last ten years PREPARES has constructed “another way” for us to uplift the Gospel of Life. Like the star that guides the Magi, PREPARES illuminate the joy of parenting through your love – the love of our Catholic community to reach children born and unborn along with their parents.
When I look at our family photo of 1912, I am keenly aware that so much has changed. Spanish has displaced German as the principal home language here at the Cathedral. The bilingual materials in Spanish and English have replaced the bilingual materials in German and English here at St. Paul Cathedral.
But our care for the young has remained the same. You are the family photo of today! Your care and your support for “PREPARES” provides a new picture of faith. So, thank you! Thank you for your support of PREPARES these last 10 years. May ours be an attitude of gratitude for the gift of the unborn, the gift of children, the gift of the newborn King, Jesus Christ! The gift of life! Peace be with you!

Homilía para el Domingo de Epifanía de 2025: Décimo aniversario de PREPARES

¡La paz del Señor esté con ustedes! Nuestro Evangelio de la Epifanía de San Mateo termina con esta frase: “Y habiendo sido avisados en sueños que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron a su país por otro camino.”
Empecemos con la palabra “ellos.” “Ellos” se refiere a los Reyes Magos o los “Tres Reyes” como se les llama en español y alemán.
Para hablar de “ellos” —los “Tres Reyes”— traje una foto de la primera casa de nuestra familia en Estados Unidos. Fue tomada alrededor de 1912. Mi abuela fue feligresa durante mucho tiempo aquí en la Catedral de San Pablo. Esta foto la incluye a ella y a sus 11 hermanas. ¡Todas fueron niñas! Muestra a mi bisabuela “encinta.” ¡Está embarazada del primero de lo que serían tres niños! Está embarazada de Balthazar. Lo llamábamos tío Balzer.
Cuando tenía unos tres años, el Santa apareció en la casa de mis abuelos aquí en Yakima por la calle 14 y Maclaren. A solo unas cuadras de la Catedral. ¡Traía un juego de camiones Tonka! Y me sorprendió oír al Santa hablándole a mi abuela en nuestro dialecto alemán nativo.
El tío Balzer tenía la figura de Santa. Mi tío era el hombre más gordo que yo había conocido en mi vida. En un tiempo, el fue el gerente de un par de tiendas de salchichas aquí en Yakima.
Tal vez puedas adivinar el nombre de mis otros dos tíos: Caspar y Frank. No sé qué pasó allí, pero tal vez Melchor, el tercero de los tres reyes, tuvo suerte de que ninguno de mis tíos se llamara como él.
A pesar del nombre “Frank,” mi abuela se quejaba amargamente de que sus hermanos eran tratados como si fueran los Reyes Magos.
“Ellos,” Se refiere a los Reyes Magos o los tres reyes. Y, de nuevo, la frase completa es “Y habiendo sido advertidos por un sueño de que no regresaran a con Herodes, partieron hacia su país por otro camino.”
Así que, dejando al lado “ellos,” permítanme centrar mi atención en la siguiente frase: “… otro camino.” Nuestro difunto Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI, tal vez lo expresó de la manera más precisa: “¡Dios viene como un bebé!” De la misma manera que los Reyes Magos veneran al niño Jesús, también PREPARES venera a todos los niños, nacidos y no nacidos, pero lo hacemos viajando “…de una manera diferente…”
PREPARES, como saben, es una iniciativa propia de nuestros obispos en todo el estado de Washington para recorrer el camino con cada madre, cada niño, sus padres y sus familias desde el momento de la concepción hasta el quinto cumpleaños del niño.
Al asociar nuestras parroquias con Caridades Católicas, (Catholic Charities) en toda la Diócesis de Yakima, brindamos amor y atención integrales que van desde pañales y fórmula hasta clases para padres, entrenamiento de habilidades para la vida y otros tipos de apoyo especializado. Al centro de todo esto, a menudo se encuentran los acompañantes de las familias. Madres capacitadas y experimentadas que pueden hacerse amigas y asesorar a las madres con su nuevo hijo. ¡Y a veces también hacemos esto con los nuevos papás!
Hace diez años, comenzamos con 5 voluntarios que llegaron a 303 familias con algún nivel de apoyo; algunos fueron acompañante de cerca por familias acompañantes. Hoy somos 272 voluntarios que llegamos a más de 3,884 familias en los siete condados de la Diócesis de Yakima.
Cuando iniciamos PREPARES hace 10 años, gran parte de la atención se centró en revocar la ley sobre el aborto conocida como Roe vs. Wade. Pero también señalé que incluso cuando se revocara la ley de Roe vs. Wade, el aborto seguiría siendo legal en el estado de Washington porque una revocación de la Corte Suprema enviaría la cuestión del aborto de nuevo a los estados.
Y eso es lo que ha sucedido. Hoy, ambos partidos políticos apoyan el aborto legal. Los demócratas apoyan la protección federal del aborto. Los republicanos, incluido el presidente electo Donald Trump, apoyan que los estados legislen el acceso al aborto. Más aún, el primer año después de la revocación de la ley Roe vs. Wade, hubo un AUMENTO de abortos en los Estados Unidos. Ese aumento también incluyó algunos estados que restringían el acceso al aborto pero que tenían leyes de activación por casos especiales.
Mientras que no es mi intención minimizar la importancia de defender la protección legal de los no nacidos, debería quedar muy claro que no podemos detener el aborto que esta al orden del día, a través de legislaciones ni litigaciones. Al igual que los Reyes Magos, debemos encontrar “…otra manera…” más eficiente que llegue a las mentes y corazones de nuestros compatriotas estadounidenses.
El programa PREPARES ofrece otra manera, una manera diferente y positiva. Ofrece una manera que no nos hace litigar con los Herodes de hoy. Recorremos una ruta diferente. Nos centramos en la madre y su hijo. Cuando podemos, nos centramos en el padre y la familia completa. Trazamos un camino que marca la alegría de la infancia, el cuidado personal de las madres, el estímulo de los padres, las habilidades para ellos y sus hijos.
Durante estos últimos diez años, PREPARES ha construido “otra manera” para que ensalcemos el Evangelio de la Vida. Al igual que la estrella que guía a los Reyes Magos, PREPARES ilumina la alegría de ser padres a través de su amor: el amor de nuestra comunidad católica para llegar a los niños nacidos y no nacidos junto con sus padres.
Cuando miro nuestra foto familiar de 1912, me doy cuenta de que muchas cosas han cambiado. El español ha desplazado al alemán como el idioma principal en el hogar aquí en la Catedral. Los materiales bilingües en español e inglés han reemplazado a los materiales bilingües en alemán e inglés aquí en la Catedral de San Pablo.
Pero nuestro cuidado de los jóvenes ha permanecido igual. ¡Ustedes son la foto familiar de hoy! Su cuidado y su apoyo para “PREPARES” proporciona una nueva imagen de fe. Por eso, ¡gracias! Muchas gracias por su apoyo a PREPARES durante estos últimos 10 años. ¡Que nuestra actitud sea una de gratitud por el don de los no nacidos, el don de los niños, el don del Rey recién nacido, Jesucristo! y ¡El don de la vida! ¡La paz del Señor esté con ustedes!
