Homily for the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary

How might we understand this Feast of the Assumption?
Doctrinally, we understand this feast to commemorate the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – body and soul – into heaven.
Pastorally, we understand her assumption as marking a pathway for us too. Where she leads, we hope to follow.
On this pastoral level, I am always struck by how many people visit Marian shrines. Indeed, the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most visited religious shrine in the world! More than Mecca in Saudi Arabia. More than any Buddhist temple in Asia! More than even St. Peter’s in Rome. More people visit the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe than any other religious site in the world.
“A great sign appeared in the sky. A woman clothed with the sun with the moon at her feet and a crown to twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud as she prepared to give birth”. Who among us hearing these words from the Book of Revelation cannot help but see the image of our Lady of Guadalupe!
And when you add in the other Marian shrines such as our Lady of Fatima in Portugal or our Lady of Lourdes in France or Our Lady of Altötting in Germany or Our Lady of La Vong in Vietnam; then suddenly you can realize just how key Mary is to our human religious experience.
Mary’s bodily assumption into heaven is key because Mary points the way. Just as the mysteries of the rosary point us to various aspects that Mary sees in the life of Jesus so, too, is Mary an orientation point giving us directionality in our own desire to follow Jesus.
In gazing on her we can ask ourselves about the direction of our life. Where are we headed? How is our pilgrimage with Jesus Christ? What’s our desire? What’s our hope? In a passing world for what or for whom do we long?
May our devotion to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary deepen our daily walk – our pilgrimage – with Christ. And may any pilgrimage we make to any Marian shrine help us to see Christ through the eyes of his Mother. Peace be with you!

¡La paz del Señor esté con ustedes!
¿Cómo podemos entender esta Fiesta de la Asunción?
Doctrinalmente, entendemos esta fiesta para conmemorar la asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, en cuerpo y alma, al cielo.
Pastoralmente, entendemos su asunción como el camino que marca también para nosotros. A donde ella lleva, esperamos también nosotros seguir. A este nivel pastoral, siempre me sorprende la cantidad de personas que visitan los santuarios marianos. ¡De hecho, el santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es el santuario religioso más visitado del mundo! Más que La Meca en Arabia Saudita. ¡Más que cualquier templo budista en Asia! Más incluso que La Basílica de San Pedro en Roma. Más personas visitan el santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe que cualquier otro sitio religioso en el mundo.
“Una gran señal apareció en el cielo. Una mujer vestida de sol con la luna a sus pies y una corona de doce estrellas. Ella estaba embarazada y lloraba en voz alta mientras se preparaba para dar a luz.” ¡Quién de nosotros al escuchar estas palabras del Libro del Apocalipsis no puede dejar de ver la imagen de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe! Y cuando agregamos los otros santuarios marianos como Nuestra Señora de Fátima en Portugal o Nuestra Señora de Lourdes en Francia o Nuestra Señora de Altötting en Alemania o Nuestra Señora de La Vong en Vietnam; entonces, de repente, podemos darnos cuenta lo importante que es María para nuestra experiencia religiosa humana.
La asunción corporal de María al cielo es clave porque María nos señala el camino. Así como los misterios del rosario nos señalan varios aspectos que María ve en la vida de Jesús, también María es un punto de orientación que nos da direccionalidad en nuestras propias ganas de seguir a Jesús.
Al mirarla podemos preguntarnos sobre el rumbo que lleva nuestra vida. ¿A donde vamos? ¿Cómo es nuestra peregrinación con Jesucristo? ¿Cuál es nuestro deseo? ¿Cuál es nuestra esperanza? En un mundo pasajero ¿qué o a quién anhelamos?
Que nuestra devoción a la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María profundice nuestro caminar diario, nuestra peregrinación, con Cristo. Y que cualquier peregrinación que hagamos a cualquier santuario mariano nos ayude a ver a Cristo atreves de los ojos de su Madre. ¡La paz esté con ustedes!
