If you haven’t done so already, please use our Action Alert links below to send a quick message to your legislators urging them to oppose the expansion of assisted suicide and the enshrining of abortion in the state constitution.  Your Catholic voice is also needed to sign in “pro” for a number of care for God’s creation bills and a bill to help students access special education.  Thank you for your faithful advocacy!

Action Alert: Oppose the Expansion of Assisted Suicide

If you haven’t done so already, please click here to send a message to your legislators and urge them to oppose the expansion of assisted suicide, Senate Bill 5179 (SB 5179) and House Bill 1281 (HB 1281).  More details about these bills can be found on the Action Alert page. Last week Bishop Joseph Tyson of the Diocese of Yakima testified against the bill.  In accordance with the bishops’ legislative priority to respect life from conception to natural death, the WSCC opposes SB 5179 and HB 1281.

Sign in “pro” for House Bill 1784 (HB 1784), which would provide hunger relief.  Please sign in by Monday, February 13 at 3 pm.  HB 1784 is scheduled for a hearing in the House Committee on Appropriations one hour later.  When signing in you may leave the “organization” box blank or write in “parishioner of — Church.” HB 1784 addresses food insecurity and provides funding for hunger relief organizations and senior nutrition services programs. In line with the bishops’ economic justice priority and legislative priority to care for the aging, the WSCC supports HB 1784.

Sign In “Pro” to Support Human Trafficking Survivors

Sign in “pro” for Senate Bill 5114 (SB 5114) to support human trafficking survivors.  Please sign in by Monday, February 13 at 3 pm. SB 5114 is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means an hour later.  When signing in you may leave the “organization” box blank or write in “parishioner of — Church.”  SB 5114 will administer funding for healing, support, and transition services for adults who are survivors of human trafficking.  In accordance with the bishops’ legislative priority to respect the dignity of every human person and assist survivors of human trafficking, the WSCC supports SB 5114 and its companion bill, HB 1089.

Sign In “Pro” for the Washington Recycling and Packaging (WRAP) Act

Sign in “pro” for the Washington Recycling and Packaging (WRAP) Act, House Bill 1131 (HB 1131).  Please sign in by Wednesday, February 15 at 3 pm. The WRAP Act has a hearing in the House Committee on Appropriations one hour later.  When signing in you may leave the “organization” box blank or write in “parishioner of — Church.” The WRAP Act addresses plastic and packaging waste by creating a set of graduated fees to be paid for by packaging manufacturers.  Fees will be based on how reusable, compostable, or recyclable products are. Fees will then be used to fund improvements to infrastructure and provide uniform recycling access across the state.  In line with the legislative priority to care for God’s creation, the WSCC supports the HB 1131 and its companion bill, Senate Bill 5154 (SB 5154).

Firme a favor del Acta Para el reciclaje y embalaje en Washington (WRAP, por sus siglas en inglés), Proyecto de ley de la Cámara de Representantes 1131 (HB 1131).  Por favor firme antes del miércoles, 15 de febrero a las 3 pm. El Acta WRAP tiene su audiencia en el Comité de Apropiaciones de la Cámara de Representantes una hora más tarde. Cuando firme, puede dejar en blanco el espacio que dice “organization” o poner allí “Parishioner of [nombre de su parroquia]”. El Acta WRAP aborda el plástico y los desechos de embalajes, creando una serie de tarifas escalonadas que deberán pagar los fabricantes de embalajes. Las tarifas se basarán en cuán reutilizables, compostables o reciclables sean sus productos. Las tarifas luego se utilizarán para financiar mejoras a infraestructuras y para proveer de acceso uniforme al reciclaje en todo el estado. Sign In “Con” for Prohibiting Cost Sharing for Abortion

Sign in “con” for Senate Bill 5242 (SB 5242), which would prohibit health insurance plans from imposing cost sharing for abortion.  Health insurers impose cost sharing for many medically necessary and life-saving procedures; abortion procedures need not be exempted from this practice. Please sign in by Monday, February 13 at 3 pm.  SB 5242 is scheduled for a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means one hour later.  When signing in you may leave the “organization” box blank or write in “parishioner of — Church.”  In line with bishops’ legislative priority to respect life, the WSCC opposes SB 5242.

Sign In “Pro” To Help Survivors of Female Genital Mutilation

Sign in “pro” for Senate Bill 5453 (SB 5453) to help survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM).  Please sign in by Tuesday, February 14 at 3 pm.  SB 5453 is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means one hour later.  When signing in you may leave the “organization” box blank or write in “parishioner of — Church.”  SB 5453 creates a civil cause of action for survivors of FGM, defines FGM as unprofessional conduct under the Uniform Disciplinary Act for health care providers, creates education programs, and establishes FGM as a crime. In line with the bishops’ priority to respect the dignity of every human person, the WSCC support SB 5453.

Action Alert: Oppose Enshrining Abortion in the State Constitution

If you have not done so already, please use this Action Alert to send a message to the governor and your legislators to urge them to oppose Senate Joint Resolution 8202 (SJR 8202) and House Joint Resolution 4201 (HJR 4201), which would create a constitutional right to an abortion.  It is still a good time to send your legislators a message.  Last year, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, giving states the ability to determine their own laws on abortion.  Abortion laws in our state did not change. Current law was determined by an initiative approved by the people, allowing for abortion up to the point of a fetus’s viability. SJR 8202 and HJR 4201 propose enshrining abortion in the state constitution. The proposed amendment would expand abortion, allowing babies to be aborted up to the point of their birth.

Bishop Frank Schuster testified against SJR 8202 and his testimony may be viewed here.  The initial screen for the clip appears to be for a different bill, but if you press play, the video will be cued for Bishop Schuster’s testimony.

In light of increased pro-abortion legislation this session, the WSCC bishops released a statement, “Supporting Life and Justice for the Common Good in Washington State,” emphasizing the Church’s teaching to respect the dignity of every human person, from conception to natural death.

SJR 8202 passed out of the Senate Committee on Health and Long Term Care, but it is not expected to pass a floor vote if legislators vote along party lines.  Unlike other bills, a joint resolution to change the constitution must receive a two-thirds affirmative vote from the full legislature.

Alerta de Acción: Opóngase a la garantía del aborto en la constitución del estado

Si no lo ha hecho aún, por favor utilice esta Alerta de Acción para enviar un mensaje al gobernador y a sus legisladores, urgiéndoles a oponerse a la Resolución conjunta del Senado 8202 (SJR 8202) y a la Resolución conjunta de la Cámara de Representantes 4201 (HJR 4201), las cuales crearían un derecho constitucional al aborto. Todavía hay tiempo para enviar un mensaje a sus legisladores. El año pasado, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos revocó Roe v. Wade, permitiendo a los estados determinar sus propias leyes de aborto. Las leyes de aborto en nuestro estado no cambiaron. La ley actual fue determinada por una iniciativa aprobada por el pueblo, que permite el aborto hasta el punto de viabilidad del feto. El SJR 8202 y HJR 4201 proponen garantizar el aborto en la constitución del estado. La enmienda propuesta ampliaría el aborto, permitiendo que un bebé sea abortado hasta el punto de su nacimiento.

En vista del aumento de legislación pro-aborto en esta sesión, los obispos de la WSCC emitieron una declaración,”Apoyando la vida y la justicia para el bien común en el estado de Washington“, enfatizando las enseñanzas de la Iglesia para respetar la dignidad de cada persona, desde su concepción hasta su muerte natural.

El SJR 8202 fue aprobado en el Comité de Salud y Cuidados prolongados del Senado, pero no se espera que sea aprobado por el plenario si los legisladores mantienen la postura de sus partidos. A diferencia de otros proyectos de leyes, una resolución conjunta para cambiar la constitución debe recibir dos tercios de votos afirmativos del plenario.

Support the Solitary Confinement Restriction Act

Targeted Action Alert: If your state legislators are members of the House Appropriations Committee or the Senate Committee on Human Services, please contact them and ask them to vote for the Solitary Confinement Restriction Act, Senate Bill 5135 (SB 5135) and House Bill 1087 (HB 1087).  Identify your legislators and obtain their contact information here. The House Committee on Appropriations will vote on Monday.  Solitary confinement can have devastating and inhumane effects on incarcerated individuals. Those placed in prolonged solitary confinement have higher rates of medical conditions, shorter life expectancy, and higher recidivism rates. Solitary confinement is also disproportionately imposed on Black, Indigenous, and Hispanic individuals. The United Nations defines solitary confinement of 15 days or more as torture. In Washington, prisoners may be isolated for up to 30 days.  SB 5135 and HB 1087 limit the use of solitary confinement to 15 consecutive days or 45 cumulative days during a fiscal year. In accordance with the bishops’ restorative justice legislative priority, the WSCC supports the Solitary Confinement Restriction Act.

Alerta de Acción especial: Si sus senadores estatales son miembros del Comité de Servicios Humanos del Senado, por favor contáctelos y pídales que voten a favor del Acta de restricción del confinamiento solitario, Proyecto de Ley del Senado 5135 (SB 5135).  Identifique a sus legisladores y obtenga su información de contacto aquí.  El confinamiento solitario puede tener efectos devastadores e inhumanos en personas encarceladas. Los que son puestos en confinamiento solitario por periodos de tiempo prolongados tienen más problemas de salud, una baja expectativa de vida y tasas de reincidencia más altas.  El confinamiento solitario es impuesto de forma desproporcionada sobre personas de raza negra, indígenas e hispanos. Las Naciones Unidas define el confinamiento solitario de 15 o más días como una tortura. En Washington, los presos pueden ser confinados hasta por 30 días. El SB 5135 y su proyecto compañero, el HB 1087, limitan el uso del confinamiento solitario a 15 días consecutivos o a 45 días acumulativos durante un año fiscal. De acuerdo con la prioridad legislativa de justicia restaurativa de los obispos, la WSCC apoya el Acta de restricción del confinamiento solitario.

Support Immigrant Workers

Targeted Action Alert: If your state legislators are members of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means or the House Committee on Labor and Workplace Standards, please ask them to support immigrant workers and pass Senate Bill 5109 (SB 5109) and House Bill 1095 (HB 1095) out of their committees.  Identify your legislators and obtain their contact information here.  SB 5109 and HB 1095 would establish a wage replacement program to help undocumented immigrant workers who are ineligible for unemployment insurance and meet certain qualifications. In line with the bishops’ economic justice, immigration, and dignity of work and rights of workers legislative priorities, the WSCC supports SB 5109 and HB 1095.

Urge Your Senator to Support These Pro-Life Bills

Now is also the time to engage in respect life advocacy by urging your state senator to support pro-life bills that have not yet been scheduled for committee hearings. Unfortunately, every year many pro-life bills are not even assigned to hearings during the legislative session.  Identify your district, senator, and senator’s email here, and then write your senator and urge him or her to support the following pro-life bills:

SB 5098 Prohibiting abortion on the basis of down syndrome

SB 5172 Ensuring only physicians perform abortions and informing women of the inherent risks associated with abortion

SB 5227 Prohibiting sex-selection abortion

SB 5185 Applies various limits to abortion

Urja a su senador a apoyar estos proyectos de leyes provida

Ahora es también el momento de abogar por el respeto por la vida, urgiendo a su senador estatal a que apoye estos proyectos de leyes provida que no han sido todavía programados para audiencias en comités. Desafortunadamente, cada año, muchos proyectos provida ni siquiera llegan a tener audiencias durante el periodo legislativo.
