Saint Joseph Added to Eucharistic Prayers

Vatican City, 19 June 2013 (VIS) – Today, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree, dated 1 May and signed by the prefect of that dicastery, Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, which provides that, after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the name of her husband St. Joseph also be read in the Eucharistic Prayers II, III, and IV.

“The faithful in the Catholic Church,” reads the decree, “have shown continuous devotion to Saint Joseph and have solemnly and constantly honoured his memory as the most chaste spouse of the Mother of God and as the heavenly Patron of the universal Church. For this reason Blessed Pope John XXIII, in the days of the Most Holy Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican, decreed that Saint Joseph’s name be added to the ancient Roman Canon. In response to petitions received from places throughout the world, the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI deemed them worthy of implementation and graciously approved them. The Supreme Pontiff Francis likewise has recently confirmed them. In this the pontiffs had before their eyes the full communion of the Saints who, once pilgrims in this world, now lead us to Christ and unite us with him.”

“As regards the Latin text, these formulas are hereby declared typical. The Congregation itself will soon provide vernacular translations in the more widespread western languages; as for other languages, translations are to be prepared by the Bishops’ Conferences, according to the norm of law, to be confirmed by the Holy See through this dicastery.”

In English, the formulas are:

In Eucharistic Prayer II:

that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,

with blessed Joseph, her Spouse,

with the blessed Apostles ...

In Eucharistic Prayer III:

with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,

with blessed Joseph, her Spouse,

with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs ...

In Eucharistic Prayer IV:

with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,

with blessed Joseph, her Spouse,

and with your Apostles ...

Death of Father Gary L. Desharnais

Rev. Gary Lee Desharnais, a senior priest of the Catholic Diocese of Yakima, died Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Yakima after an extended period of poor health. He was 73.

Fr. Desharnais was born Dec. 15, 1939 in Yakima to George and Florence (Brouette) Desharnais. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated in 1958 from Marquette High School, after which he attended Yakima Valley Community College (1958-1959), St. Phillip Neri College in Boston (1960-1961), and Seattle University (1962-1965).

After college, Fr. Desharnais worked in radio and as a print journalist, including a stint with the Yakima Herald-Republic.  He was principal assistant to former Washington governor John Spellman in his successful 1968 campaign as the first King County Executive.

Fr. Desharnais worked in media jobs in Seattle and Los Angeles before settling in New Mexico for 23 years, much of that time as a photographer for the Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He was married, and raised three daughters.

In 1996, following retirement from Los Alamos, Fr. Desharnais entered Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis. and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Yakima on May 26, 2000 at St. Paul Cathedral by Bishop Carlos A. Sevilla, S.J.

Fr. Desharnais served for two years as parochial vicar of Holy Family Parish in Yakima, where he successfully recovered from throat cancer.  He then served as pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Grandview and Immaculate Conception Parish in Mabton until June 19, 2009, when he returned to Holy Family as parochial vicar for health reasons.  He retired on July 1, 2012 following a difficult recovery from several bouts of pneumonia.  He had been receiving treatment for a cancerous tumor near his right lung when he died.

In the midst of his recent health difficulties, Fr. Desharnais was able to administer the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion to his grandson Samuel Gomolski, at an April 22  Mass at Holy Family, a very special celebration for him and his family.

He is survived by his brother Wally (Carrol) Desharnais of Seattle; daughters Kati Soleil of Nashville, Tenn., Jodi Desharnais of Breckenridge, Colo., and Darci (Brian) Gomolski of Spokane, and their children Nicole, Zachary, Alexander, Samuel and Paula.

The Vigil for Fr. Desharnais is at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Holy Family.  Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21 at Holy Family, immediately followed by burial in the priests’ plot at Calvary Cemetery, then a luncheon back at the church.

Donations in Fr. Desharnais’ memory may be made to the Diocese of Yakima Priest Retirement Fund or Seminarian Education Fund, 5301-A Tieton Drive, Yakima, WA 98908.

Fr. Gary's celebration of the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion
with his grandson Samuel recently was a special moment for him and his family.

Bishop and Pope Francis Discuss Yakima

Dear Friends:

As many of you know, John Young – our Catholic Charities Director – and I have been traveling in Europe for two weeks connected with the O'Grady Institute, bringing together people from the two largest Charities networks in the world: Caritas Deutschland and Catholic Charities U.S.A.

After spending a week at the University of Freiburg in Germany we arrived this week in Italy, visiting Caritas Internationalis, Carita' Italia, the Pontifical Council for Peace and Justice as well as "Cor Unum," which coordinates many of the Church's charitable efforts.

Wednesday was Pope Francis' weekly audience day.  I had the chance to visit the Pope very briefly at the end of the audience in Spanish.  He asked about Yakima, about the large migrant community and specifically asked about the number and percentage of immigrants in our Diocese.  He ended by asking me – and all of us – to pray for him, which I know you who are reading this will be doing! (click on the attachment to see more images from my visit to Rome)
-------------------------------------------------

Catholic Radio Station Experiencing Difficulties

Radio KYTR, the Catholic radio station that broadcasts in the Yakima area, has been experiencing persistent technical difficulties over the past few weeks.  While the station is not a ministry of the Diocese of Yakima, we are lending what support what we can.  For those who are frustrated at the inconvenience, please know that the board and volunteers of the station are doing their best to overcome these technical difficulties.  Let's keep this ministry in our prayers.

Remembering The Long Lost Germans Of Texas

Dear Friends:

Many of you know my family's first language in the home was German.  My grandparents spoke it quite a bit – especially when they didn't want us to understand.  Indeed, Father Francis Schoenberg, S.J., who served many years at St. Joseph Parish in Yakima, used to hear confessions for German speakers from all over Yakima.  Yakima at one point had a large number of German speakers.

I think I'm the youngest person in Yakima that still speaks the German so prominent so many years ago!  Sunday's Morning Edition radio program did a feature on the Germans of Texas who have the same dialect as that of this area in Yakima.  You might want to read the story or listen to the actual German that was spoken.  Click here to read and hear: Click Here

Help Promote the Fortnight for Freedom

Dear Fathers:

"Fortnight for Freedom" was launched last year by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a way to highlight the importance of our first and most cherished freedom that we enjoy as American citizens:  Freedom of Religion.

All three metropolitan areas –   Wenatchee, Yakima and the Tri-Cities –  had opportunities for parishioners to engage and be part of this nation-wide effort.

Below you will find a link to a number of resource materials in both Spanish and English that you can pull down and reproduce for your local parish efforts.  Consider passing these materials onto one of your parish leaders who might take the lead in coordinating your efforts.

More resources are available at the USCCB Fortnight For Freedom website.

Kindly remember too that this is not a partisan event, so avoid providing officials in public life a platform for their individual views.  Certainly no comments should be made against individuals but rather comments should be in favor of everyone uplifting religious liberty.  That means this should be a parish-led event and not co-sponsored by other organizations with partisan agendas.  Everyone is welcome to come, but parishioners should be public and in the lead.

Like last year, send us digital pictures that we can post on Facebook and our diocesan web page.

Thanks for your consideration of this event.

+Bishop Joseph Tyson
